Home Maintenance for Your Hair Extensions

You’ve invested in beautiful hair extensions—now let’s keep them looking seamless, soft, and healthy for as long as possible! Taking care of your extensions is a little different than caring for your natural hair, but don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. Follow this guide, and your hair will stay gorgeous between appointments.

  • Before you even think about hopping in the shower, brush your hair first using a soft-bristle brush. This helps prevent tangles while washing and keeps your extensions from matting at the roots.

    ·        Shampoo – Focus the shampoo on your scalp, focusing on the areas between the rows of extensions. Gently massage without aggressive scrubbing to avoid tangling. Let the suds run down the length of your hair—no rough scrubbing! consider shampooing twice to ensure a thorough cleanse. I highly recommend the Kevin Murphy Everlasting Color Wash. Our water here is full of hard minerals that can strip color and dry out your hair. This shampoo protects against that while keeping your extensions soft and hydrated.

    ·        Conditioning – Use Kevin Murphy Everlasting Color Rinse and apply it from roots to ends only. Let it sit for a few minutes to deeply nourish your hair. Rinsing with cool water to seal the cuticles and add shine.

    ·        Leave-In Treatment – Spray Kevin Murphy's Everlasting.Colour Leave-In onto damp hair to provide extra protection and detangling benefits.

    ·        Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel. Avoid rubbing, as it can cause frizz and tangling.

  • Brushing properly is key to keeping your extensions from tangling, shedding, or matting at the base.

    • After washing – Always brush your hair while it’s still damp. Use a soft-bristle brush and start at the ends, working your way up while holding the top of your weft to avoid pulling at your natural hair.

    • Daily brushing – On dry days, never brush your hair without adding some moisture first. Use Kevin Murphy Young Again Dry Conditioner before brushing to create slip, add moisture and reduce friction. After brushing, apply Kevin Murphy's Young.Again Oil to the ends to nourish and add shine.

    • How often? – You should be brushing at least 3 times a day, especially in the morning, before bed, and anytime you’ve been active.

  • Never go to bed with wet extensions—it’s a recipe for tangles and matting.

    • Towel dry first – Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel or soft T-shirt. Avoid rough towel drying or wrapping your hair in a turban.

    • Blow-dry immediately – Apply Kevin Murphy Blow Dry Ever Smooth for heat protection and a frizz-free finish. Blow-dry, using low to medium heat setting, your roots first, focusing on where your wefts are attached. Once your roots are completely dry, finish drying the lengths with a round or paddle brush using minimal tension to not damage your natural hair where your wefts are attached.

    • Protection First - Always apply a heat protectant before using any hot tools. R+Co Bleu's Smooth & Seal Blow-Dry Mist is excellent for this purpose.

    • Heat tools –Keep heat tools at 350°F or lower to avoid unnecessary damage.

    • Texture & volume – Want that lived-in, effortless look? R+Co Bleu Ultra Dry Texture Spray is your best friend for adding movement and body without stiffness.

    • Up Do’s – Always use silk or satin scrunchies when putting your hair up in pony’s or braids. Never use claw clips as they can get caught in your natural hair that are in the beads and cause breakage or pull hairs out.

    • Silk is your best friend – A silk bonnet or silk pillowcase helps reduce friction and prevents breakage while you sleep.

    • Loose styles only – Before bed, braid your hair in a loose three-strand braid or a low ponytail secured with a silk scrunchie. Avoid tight buns that can cause tension at the roots. And try not to do the same style every night as friction on the same hairs night after night can cause breakage.

Oil daily – Extensions don’t get natural oils from your scalp, so apply Kevin Murphy Young Again Oil once a day (especially before bed) to keep them hydrated and soft.

    • Swimming – Chlorine and saltwater are not extension-friendly! Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and apply Everlasting Color Leave-In to create a protective barrier. Always braid your hair, with a silk or satin scrunchy, to keep it from tangling. Immediately rinse your hair with fresh water after swimming to remove any residual chemicals or salt.

    • Shielding Your Hair - Wear a hat or use hair products with UV protection to guard against sun damage. Kevin Murphy’s Everlasting Color Line is formulated to repair and protect against UV damage.

    • Sunscreen Caution - Be mindful that certain sunscreens contain ingredients like Avobenzone, which can discolor hair extensions, especially lighter shades, turning them orange or pink. Avoid contact between your hair and such products as much as possible.

By following these tailored guidelines and using the recommended Kevin Murphy and R+Co Bleu products, you'll keep your extensions looking fresh, soft, and tangle-free between appointments. Remember, I'm always here to help with any questions or concerns you may have about your hair care routine!
